The project officially starts tomorrow. But here are a few food-related news items that I thought that people might be interested in.
Move Over, Jared from Subway -- Here Comes Christine for Taco Bell! She calls it the "Taco Bell Diet," but my feeling is that she substituted what she would normally eat at Taco Bell with the "healthier options," and then ate healthy the rest of the time, as well. But I think the name might lead some people to believe that's all she ate the entire time.
The Decade of the Foodie An interesting article on how food dominated the last decade.
Kim Kardashian Sued by "Cookie Diet" Makers Because QuikTrim is so much healthier.
The Tapeworm Diet For some reason this is coming back, even though the FDA has banned this particular diet.
Predicted Food Trends for 2010
2009 A Year To Remember Food-Wise In reading the first paragraph of that article, I discovered that someone else already did a similar project to what I'm about to attempt. I'm hoping that my attempt is a different take on what he did -- my concept is more along the lines of what we average monkeys eat over the course of a year.
Have a Happy New Year, stay safe, and don't drink too much.

How This Will Work
What's going to happen is that I will be posting as late into the night as possible in order to ensure that I have recorded every single little bit of food I've eaten during the day. The formatting isn't going to be taking the form of a typical "food diary" -- I'm not going to track it by meal. Instead, it's going to be by food group.
So when you see the first entry, it's going to look something like this:
Protein
This will be primarily meats, although it might include some stray protein sources as well such as beans, peanut butter, and tofu.
Vegetables
For the sake of this experiment, "vegetable" will be identified as anything grown in the ground. If it happens to be a starchy vegetable, it will go under "multiple" with an explanation.
Fruit
"Fruit" is identified as almost anything grown on a tree. This will include fruit juices and fruit punches (100% juice).
Starches
Bread, pasta, etc. Anything with a lot of carbs in it.
Fat
Butter, oil, etc. Anything with a high fat content, for better or for worse. Which means nuts will go in this category, as well.
Dairy
Cheese, milk, etc.
Multiple
If it can't fall under one category, it will go here with an explanation of what food groups are included in the item.
Other
Junk food for the most part will go here, as well as anything that I can't put in a particular food group.
Reflection
After I look over what I've eaten over the course of the day, I'll reflect on what it means. The first few entries might be a little sparse in this area since we'll be just starting, but after about a week or so, I might start to see a pattern.

This is Not A Diet Blog
This actually got me curious because I have never, ever managed to stick to a diet. I don't know why, I just haven't. So maybe if I track what I eat in a year's time, I can pinpoint where I end up going wrong.
I'll probably start off the year going back on the last plan I was on (it was working before I got off of it), but I'll also track the ugly truth about my own eating habits, for better or for worse.
So starting January 1, 2010, we are going into a year's journey into what I eat, what you may eat, and see where we get sidetracked. And it won't be pretty.
Along with that, I'll also post some articles along the way on general food issues, whether it's in regards to "nanny staters" wanting to take care of us (I believe strongly in personal responsibility), PETA trying to tell us what to eat (I'm a carnivore), or other food related stuff.
Because I want to write down everything that I had during the day and comment on it, expect me to write the main posts late at night. So late on January 1, you can expect the first official post in this space.
